TOPIC 1 - GETTING READY TO LEARN

"Congratulations! If you’ve reached the stage of preparing for university, you, first of all, should be very proud of yourself. You are about to embark on what is probably the biggest change in your life so far. The transition may be unfamiliar, but fun and exciting nonetheless… Get ready for Warwick!!!"

As a university student, there are clearly some preparations you need to make and know. You need to realize that every decision you make will determine and influence your future. Will even affect important people around you such as your family. Therefore, you should have a sense of responsibility to ensure that you will not regret the decision you choose. Firstly, you need to identify the differences between high school students and college or university students.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGH SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY

LEARNING STYLES & CHARACTERISTIC OF SUCCESSFULL STUDENTS

MY LEARNING STYLE

My preferred learning style is through reading and sight, which is visual. I find it easier to understand by seeing something and reading to memorized. When I see and read a passage, I will remember more what is stated in the passage. I will learn better if by observing and reading. I enjoy looking at picture graphics, maps, diagrams and charts. I love reading so much that I love magazines, books and other types of reading material. I will read the book carefully and diligently to get information. At one time, I once read a novel which has 600 pages and I only read it in 2 days only. This is because reading books is my main hobby. When I unable to take notes the important things, I get frustrated. But I do not give up easily, I will try to find a way to get notes.

TOPIC 5 : MEMORY, LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

LEARNING PYRAMID

INFORMATION PROCESSING MODEL

WHAT IS MEMORY?

Memory is the ability to save and remain the information and experience.

  • ENSORY MEMORY – numerous incoming information from 5 senses will be stored in sensory memory for an instant. When you pay attention to the stimuli it will go to the short-term memory, but if you not pay attention it would not be last long and may lost

  • SHORT-TERM MEMORY – our short term memory have only limited storage. The information must be repeated in order to get information to long-term memory.

  • LONG-TERM MEMORY – our long term memory is unlimited and have large storage. If the information is not being used for long time. The information will be lost.
THREE KINDS OF MEMORIES OR STORES

HOW FORGETTING COULD OCCUR?

1. Did not pay attention to the information.
2. Did not understand the information.
3. Last minute study (cramming).
4. Did not have good strategies.

MEMORY STRATEGIES (HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY)

1. Massed practice vs Spaced practice
  • Do not have time to understand, remember and organize the reading materials. (Reason: short term memory (STM) can not sustain many information at one time).
  • Spaced practice (good, recommended) - involve space time over some period of time for studying.
  • Spaced practice/distributed practice allows time for the information to consolidate in the long-term memory.
  • Taking breaks between learning sessions allow you to think and recognize the info.

2. Break reading material down (again, no cramming) for some period of time e.g two chapter per day, not all chapters a day before exam.

3. Rehearsal
  • Repeat the info many times
4. Elaboration strategies
  • Association - To associate or 'connect' each word or event with a person, place, thing, picture, feeling or situation.

  • Acronyms/catchwordsHACKS
  • Acrostics/CatchphraseCONTENT OF RESUME (JEPWR)
    1. Personal information
    2. Job interest
    3. Education
    4. Work experience
    5. References

    "JAJA ENGGAK PERLU WAKTU REHAT"
  • Imagery - visualize the image of the information needed.

WHAT IS CONCENTRATION?

CAUSE OF POOR CONCENTRATION

  • Lack of interest.
  • Lack of motivation.
  • Distraction from others.
  • Uncomfortable environment.
  • Physiological matters - illness, tiredness.
  • Psychological matters - personal problem, worries, anxieties.

STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE CONCENTRATION
  • Use motivational and organizational strategies - create interest in the work, develop a positive attitude toward your work, use goal setting strategies, use time management strategies.
  • Create apositive learning environment - find a better location, reduce multitasking, minimize distraction.
  • Deal with internal distraction- deal with personal problem.
  • Use active learning strategies (as dicussed before).
  • Match your learning styles to the tasks.
  • Monitor your concentration.
